You cannot get an official X API key without signing up with X. You can get a key for public X data from a third-party provider, and that key comes from the provider, not from X. This guide explains the difference and then walks through getting a TwittrAPI key.

## Every official key comes from console.x.com

The [X API overview](https://docs.x.com/x-api/getting-started/about-x-api) lists the steps: sign up at console.x.com, create an app, get credentials. Each official key belongs to a console account and an app. There is no way around that for the official API.

A third-party data provider works differently. It runs its own infrastructure, issues its own keys and serves public X data through its own REST endpoints. You sign up with the provider. When people say "X API key without a developer account", this is what they end up with.

A third-party key is not an X API key. It only works on that provider's endpoints, X does not issue or support it, and it does not replace the official API for posting or acting on behalf of users. TwittrAPI is not affiliated with X Corp.

## Official key versus third-party key

| | Official X API key | Third-party key (e.g. TwittrAPI) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Issued by | X, via console.x.com | The provider |
| Signup | X Developer Console account and app | Provider account or API marketplace |
| Billing | Pay-per-usage credits from X | Provider's own pricing |
| Read public posts and users | Yes | Yes |
| Create posts, act for users | Yes, with user authorization | Use the official API for this |
| Private or protected accounts | Only with the account owner's authorization | No |
| Support | X | The provider |

If you need to post, reply or manage an account, use the official API. It is the right tool for posting. The same goes for teams that need a direct relationship with X for compliance. Our post on [X API pricing in 2026](https://www.twittrapi.com/blog/x-api-pricing-2026) covers what the official route costs: $0.005 per post read and $0.010 per user read.

If you only read public data (searching posts, looking up profiles, pulling a user's tweets, listing followers), a third-party key is usually enough and costs much less. The other route people try is scraping x.com themselves; [how to scrape Twitter (X) data in 2026](https://www.twittrapi.com/blog/how-to-scrape-twitter-x-data) explains why that usually ends with blocked requests.

## Three ways to get a TwittrAPI key

All three start from the [/start](https://www.twittrapi.com/start) page.

### Direct account: the cheapest option

1. Sign up through [/start](https://www.twittrapi.com/start). This creates an account in the customer dashboard.
2. You get $0.10 in free test credit after sign-up.
3. Copy your base URL and API key from the dashboard.
4. Send the key in the `X-API-KEY` header on every request.

A user lookup by username:

```bash
curl --request GET \
  --url 'https://api.twittrapi.com/user/by/username/XDevelopers' \
  --header 'X-API-KEY: YOUR_API_KEY'
```

Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with the key from your dashboard. The response is JSON with the public profile for that username. The [documentation](https://www.twittrapi.com/docs) has the exact paths and parameters for the other endpoints.

Direct pricing is per 1,000 API calls, from $0.065:

| Tier | Price per 1,000 calls | Condition |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Scale | $0.065 | While your top-ups of the last 30 days add up to $500 or more |
| Volume | $0.075 | For 30 days after a top-up of $100 or more |
| Standard | $0.09 | Any top-up |

The balance does not expire. Calls that fail with 400, 408, 409 or a 5xx error are refunded. Crypto (USDT or USDC on Polygon, USDT on Tron, or Litecoin) with no surcharge, the cheapest way to pay. Card for one-time top-ups from $20 (9% card fee). USDT on Tron: minimum $50 and a $3 network fee per deposit, deducted from the credit. Auto top-up and invoices with VAT ID (reverse charge) for business customers on request. The [pricing page](https://www.twittrapi.com/pricing) has the details.

### RapidAPI: quickest if you already have an account

RapidAPI is an API marketplace. If your team already uses it, this route takes a couple of minutes.

1. Open the TwittrAPI listing on RapidAPI from [/start](https://www.twittrapi.com/start).
2. Sign in and pick a plan. BASIC is $0 for 300 requests per month, enough to try the endpoints. Paid plans are PRO at $4.99 for 12,000 requests, ULTRA at $55 for 500,000 and MEGA at $95 for 1,000,000.
3. Copy your RapidAPI key from the listing.

RapidAPI keys go in the `x-rapidapi-key` header and use RapidAPI's host. The RapidAPI tab on the example above shows the full request. At full use, MEGA works out to $0.095 per 1,000 requests, so direct is cheaper once your volume is steady.

### JojAPI

TwittrAPI is also on the [JojAPI marketplace](https://jojapi.com/api/twitter-x-aio). Create a JojAPI account, subscribe to the API and use the key JojAPI gives you. This suits teams that already buy APIs through JojAPI.

## What the key gives you access to

The endpoints are REST, return JSON and authenticate with the key header. The [API reference](https://www.twittrapi.com/docs/reference) lists every endpoint with its parameters. The groups are:

- **Search**: tweets by Top, Latest, People, Photos or Videos, with filters for language, date, hashtags and minimum likes, and cursor pagination.
- **Tweets**: tweet details with replies and conversation, favorites and retweets.
- **Users**: profiles by username or ID, user tweets, replies, media, likes, followers, verified followers and followings.
- **Communities**, **Lists**, **Trends** and **Jobs**.
- **Misc**: hashflag emojis.

## Keep the key on your server

A third-party key spends your balance, so treat it like any other credential.

- Keep it in an environment variable or a secrets manager. Do not commit it.
- Call the API from your backend. A key shipped in a browser bundle or mobile app can be extracted.
- If a key leaks, rotate it in the marketplace, or contact support for a direct account.

## What you give up with an unofficial API

Third-party X data APIs are useful. They also come with limits you should know before you build on one.

**They are unofficial.** Providers like TwittrAPI are not affiliated with X Corp. X does not support or guarantee them, and platform changes can affect them.

**Public data only.** You get public posts, profiles and related data. Private and protected content is not available.

**Support comes from the provider.** When something breaks, you talk to the provider. X will not help.

**Compliance is your job.** Whether using public X data through a third party fits your use case depends on your jurisdiction, your industry and how you store and process the data. Check privacy law and the terms that apply to you before you build.

**Prices use different units.** Some providers charge per tweet returned, others per call. We charge per call, so a profile lookup is one call. For search and timelines, the cost per tweet depends on how many results each call returns. Compare providers with your own queries. Our [twitterapi.io alternative](https://www.twittrapi.com/blog/twitterapi-io-alternative) post works through an example, and [the cheapest Twitter API in 2026](https://www.twittrapi.com/blog/cheapest-twitter-api-2026) compares published prices. Request limits differ too; see [Twitter API rate limits explained](https://www.twittrapi.com/blog/twitter-api-rate-limits).
